Driving School In English In Constanta

Whether you came to Romania to work, study, or live, you’ll want to get your driver’s license sooner or later.

This blog will allow you to understand what do you need to get a driver’s license in Romania, how much it costs, how long it takes, and everything in between.

Let’s begin.

What Do You Need As A Foreigner To Get A Driver's License In Romania?

First things first, you should know that foreigners can use their existing driving license in Romania for up to 90 days.

So, for example, if you’re in Romania for just one or two months, you can still drive a car without getting a Romanian driver’s license.

The 90 days start from the day you enter the country.

But if you’re here for more than 90 days and you want to get your driver’s license, you’ll need the following…

Proof of identity

Proof of identity can be your existing driver’s license, passport, or ID card from your home country.

Of course, we’ll need to know you’re here legally before you’ll get a Romanian driver’s license.

Proof of residency

Proof of residency can be anything that has an address associated with your name. This can be a utility bill or a leasing contract.

Sign up with a driving school

To be able to get the driver’s license, you’ll have to sign up with a driving school, take driving lessons with an instructor, and learn the applicable law here in Romania.

You’ll do 300km of driving, 24 hours of theory lessons, and 30 driving lessons. Each driving lesson will be either two sessions of 50 mins of driving with 10 minutes break, or just one session of 100 minutes of driving, and 20 minutes break.

To sign up with a driver’s school, you’ll need your ID, a down payment for the driving lessons, your criminal record from the police station, a psychological exam, and a short medical examination as proof that you are capable of driving.

Auto Pontus offers driving and theory lessons in English! For this, there’s a fee of 100 euros that covers the extra time and effort our instructors will put in to help you fully understand and pass the exams.

What nationalities can use the home country driver's license in Romania?

Romania recognizes all driving license issued by EU countries, and several other non-EU countries. For example, if you have a driver’s license issued in France, Spain, Germany, etc., you’ll be able to use it here indefinitely.

But how about non-EU countries, like Vietnamese, Syrians, Sudanese, Sri Lankans, and so on?

According to Romanian law, authorities don’t have to recognize any foreign driving license (that’s not issued in an EU country).

However, the International Driving License (IDL) can prove that you have a valid driving license and can drive certain vehicles.

If your country has signed the 1968 Convention On Road Traffic, your IDL will be recognized. But, if your driver’s license is in English, the authorities might not even request the IDL.

So, do you need a Romanian driver's license?

It really depends…

For some nationalities, a new, Romanian driver’s license is mandatory.

Some nationalities can just convert their driving license without even taking the exams. The process is a lot easier in those cases.
